LVFC Members Awarded by the Towson American Legion
December 06, 2009 - Several LVFC members were awarded by the Towson American Legion Post 22 for the awards of Volunteer Firefighter of the Year and Career Emergency Medical Technician of the Year. These awards are presented to those "first responders" who have exceeded the requirements expected of their positions, and who have demonstrated community service coupled with professional achievement. LVFC members Lieutenant Rodney Hyde and Firefighter Barry Brewer Jr. were both nominated for and awarded the Firefighter of the Year for their quick action on an emergency scene in April. While on scene of a motor vehicle accident on the inner-loop of the Baltimore beltway between Greenspring Avenue and Falls Road, LVFC's crew suddenly became ware of a vehicle at full speed headed right for them and their rescue squad. Brewer shouted to the crew to watch out, and Hyde opened his arms and herded his crew to safety before the fast moving car struck the rear of the rescue squad where they had all been standing. Without the sudden actions of these two individuals, the incident could have resulted into severe harm to LVFC's crew. Another LVFC member, Paramedic / Firefighter Daniel Finke, was awarded the Career Emergency Medical Technician of the Year. Finke joined the Baltimore County Fire Department in 2003 as an EMT, and enrolled in a 1,300-hour program on his own time to become certified as a paramedic. He then took training to become a firefighter, and now is trained and cleared to act as acting Lieutenant in the Emergency Medical Services Division. LVFC would like to congratulate and thank these LVFC members for their dedicated service and the professionalism they demonstrate.

LVFC Responds to Dwelling Fire off of Falls Road: Fire Box 50-11
September 26, 2009 - At approximately 12:38am, Squad 303 was alerted to respond to the report of a dwelling fire with fire in the attic on Forwood Court. First arriving units reported a two-story single family dwelling with fire showing through the roof. Command immediately requested a tanker strike team due to the lack of fire hydrants/water supply in the area and a second alarm assignment. Shortly thereafter, crews from Squad 303 and other Baltimore County units arrived and conducted an immediate search of the dwelling to ensure all occupants were safely evacuated. Engine 302 responded to the incident as part of the tanker strike team and transported water to the scene from designated fill sites. Due to a partial roof collapse and lack of water available to units on scene, command ordered all crews operating in the structure to evacuate and assume defensive exterior operations. Crews operated on the scene for over four hours.

September 22, 2009 - At approximately 10:21am, Station 30 units were alerted for a 10-50PI Rescue on Pot Spring Road between Cinder Road and Deer Fox Lane. As Engine 307 was returning from a wires-down call, dispatch advised the crew to standby and prepare to copy a rescue assignment. Shortly thereafter, Squad 303 arrived along with Tower 17 and both units began shoring up the vehicle for stabilization purposes. Due to the awkward position of the vehicle and the uneven terrain, crews utilized Squad 303's crane, portable winch, and rescue struts to provide stabilization to the vehicle. Crews then worked to begin the lengthy extrication process of cutting the patient free, which was completed in approximately 35 minutes. The patient was then stabilized, packaged and prepared for transport to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Units on Scene: DC1, E307, SQ303, TOW17, M17, EMS7, E17, U304
