LVFC Responds to MTA Light Rail Incident: Local Box 30-7
July 5, 2009 - At approximately 3:20pm, Station 30 was alerted for an unusual report of two subjects being struck by a Light Rail train near the Lutherville / West Ridgely Road MTA Light Rail stop. Upon arrival, MTA Transit Police were at location and directed first arriving units to the location of the incident, which was approximately 100 yards south of the station. First responders confirmed that two male subjects had been struck and immediately began patient assessment. Command confirmed two priority one patients and requested two medevac helicopters. One patient was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma via Trooper 1 while the other was transported to a local hospital via Medic 117. LVFC Participates in Towson's 4th of July Parade
July 4, 2009 - LVFC celebrated Independence Day with the community by participating in Towson's Annual 4th of July Parade. Apparatus made available for the parade included Utility 304, which pulled a trailer carrying the company's first piece of apparatus (a circa 1890 Wirt and Knox Hose Reel), Antique Engine 309 (a 1954 Mack B Model), Engine 301, Engine 302, Engine 307 and new Squad 303.
Station 30 Places New Squad 303 in Service
June 29, 2009 - The Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company placed new Squad 303 in service, replacing the company's 24-year old Mack unit. LVFC wishes to thank Pierce Manufacturing, Singer Associates, Max Metals and members of Lutherville's Squad Committee for all the time and effort put into developing the new apparatus.
On June 29th, 2009 at approximately 20:00 hours, Captain Weatherby of LVFC placed Squad 303 in service: "Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company is proud to place in service new Squad 303: a 2008 Pierce Velocity, Heavy Duty Rescue. This unit includes an eight man cab with the latest safety features, a full compliment of Holmatro rescue tools and a 10-ton National crane. This unit is dedicated to Baltimore County Fire Department living legend Lew Woolf for his faithful service to the citizens of Baltimore County for over 50 years."
Station 30 Runs Unusual Extrication on the Beltway: Rescue Box 30-63
June 29, 2009 – Around 0700 hours, Station 30 was altered for a 10-50 PI on the outer loop of 695 between exits 23 and 24. On arrival motorists stated that a vehicle had run off the road, hit a dirt mound causing it to go airborne and had landed out of sight in a ravine. Rescue-Engine 301’s crew climbed down the embankment to find a BMW convertible resting on its roof against a tree. E301’s officer immediately called for a Rescue-Box assignment, bringing additional resources. E301’s crew stabilized the vehicle while Medics began assessing the patient. Engine 302 responded as part of the rescue assignment and assisted with the extrication. Lutherville members used the portable Holmatro pump to power the extrication tools used to cut the victim from the car. While crews were working on the extrication, Truck 1 and USAR 17 set up a Z-Rig attached to a stokes basket to remove the victim from the ravine. Members Participate in Rescue Tool Training and Drivers Training
June 15, 2009 - LVFC members participated in a vehicle rescue training exercise and oriented themselves with LVFC's new Holmatro Core Technology hydraulic rescue tools. Senior officers and members used this opportunity to mentor new and younger members in vehicle extrication operations. While members were simulating an auto rescue incident, drivers were familiarizing themselves with the new squad. Drivers took part in a walk around orientation of the apparatus and were required to drive through a simulated D.O.T. driving course.
LVFC Receives Grant for Equipment Purchase
June 11, 2009 - The Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company thanks All Risks, Ltd. and Fireman's Fund Insurance Company for a grant of $15,856 which has allowed for the purchase of new attack hose lines and Akron Brass nozzles on all three of Lutherville's engines. In addition, this grant has also funded the purchase of several portable / battery operated LED lighting units which will allow members to operate safely at emergency scenes. LVFC members, local dignitaries and senior officials from the Baltimore County Fire Department were in attendance at the ceremony.
Basement Fire in Rodgers Forge: Fire Box 1-14
June 10, 2009 – Just prior to 2am, units in the first battalion were alerted for a dwelling fire on Dunkirk Road. First arriving units reported heavy smoke showing on side Alpha. Truck 1 immediately performed a primary search while Engine 101 and Engine 11 advanced two attack lines. Engine 307 and Engine 14 reported to the rear of the structure (side Charlie) to ladder the dwelling. Crews in the house encountered heavy smoke conditions and reported a possible basement fire. Engine 307’s crew worked with Engine 14 to access the basement. Engine 11’s crew had trouble finding the fire from the basement steps so Engine 307’s crew advanced a line from side Charlie. Command requested 3 additional Engines due to the amount of overhaul. Crews operated on the scene for over 4 hours. Lumber Yard Fire: Fire Box 30-10
June 7, 2009 - LVFC was alerted for an unknown type fire at Bond Lumber Yard located at the intersection of West Seminary Avenue and Railroad Avenue. While en route, dispatch upgraded the call to a fire box assignment and advised responding units that multiple calls had been received with reports of thick black smoke in the area. Engine 302 arrived first to find a large flat bed trailer full of tires burning toward the rear of the yard. Crew members from Engine 302, with assistance from Engine 101 and Truck 1, extinguished the fire by applying foam. Units on scene: E302, E301, E101, T1
LVFC Participates in House Burning Exercise
June 6, 2009 - Members from LVFC along with Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department (Station 35), Hereford Volunteer Fire Company (Station 44), Parkton Career Station (Station 60) and Martin State Airport participated in live burn exercises at a vacant house in northern Baltimore County. To prepare for real life situations, Officers used the opportunity to have experienced firefighters mentor newer and younger members. Division Chief Michael Robinson along with other senior officers and instructors from Baltimore County's Fire Rescue Academy were in attendance.
Station 30 Responds with 3 Engines to 4th-Alarm Apt. Fire: Fire Box 17-19
June 4, 2009 – Around 11:40pm, Station 30 was alerted for an apartment fire at Milestone Manor Apartments in Cockeysville. Dispatch advised units en route that multiple calls had been received with reports of the building engulfed in flames and people trapped. Engine 17 arrived on location, reported heavy fire through the roof, established command and requested a second alarm. Battalion Chief 1 advised all units to bring water to the location. Engine 307 arrived seconds later and laid a 5” supply line from Scott Adam Rd and St. David Ct. Engine 307’s crew of 5 immediately performed search and rescue, and then moved to the adjacent building to prevent the fire from spreading. The driver of 307 threw ladders to the rear of the building and put a 1 ¾ attack line in service. The fire hydrant next to the building that Engine 17 was hooked up to did not work so the driver of Engine 302 strategically positioned the apparatus in a neighboring complex and dragged a supply line through the woods. Crews operated on the scene for over five hours to extinguish the fire. Reports indicate that approximately one dozen apartments were severely damaged as a result of the fire. Dwelling Fire in First Due – Sta. 30 Responds with 3 Engines: Fire Box 30-9
June 3, 2009 – Around 9:15am, Station 30 was alerted for a dwelling fire in box 30-9. Engine 307, responding with a crew of 4, arrived at the Bellona Avenue address with access problems due to a steep incline of the resident’s driveway. E307 dropped a 5-inch supply line for a split lay to the hydrant. E307's officer gave an initial report of a 1 1/2 story single family dwelling approximately 30x50 with heavy fire conditions on the Bravo/Charlie corner extending to the attic and established Bellona Ave. command. All occupants were out and uninjured upon arrival. E307's crew advanced a 1 3/4 attack line through the dwelling over numerous obstacles. Engine 302, responding as the 2nd due engine, vented the structure by taking out some windows then began a primary search. Engine 17's crew advanced a back up line while Ttuck 17 vented the roof on side charlie. Engine 101 was established as RIT. Engine 301 helped to overhaul the house and hit the hot spots. Fully Involved Dwelling off of Greenspring Avenue: Fire Box 50-15
March 15, 2009 – At approximately 4 am, Engine 302 and Squad 303 were alerted for a dwelling fire at the intersection of Greenspring Avenue and Woodland Drive. First arriving units reported a large single family dwelling fully involved with heavy fire venting through the roof. Due to the lack of fire hydrants in the area, Command requested a tanker strike team and defensive exterior operations were established. Engine 302 provided water to the scene, transporting water from two fill sites, while Squad 303 provided lighting. Snow Storm Causes Severe Accident on Beltway: Rescue Box 32-61
March 2, 2009 – A snow storm caused major traffic issues during the early morning rush hour commute. Squad 303 responded to an accident on the outer-loop of the beltway near Parks Heights Avenue. Units on the scene reported one victim severely trapped after his car was broadsided by a truck. Squad 303’s crew assisted with cutting the roof off of the vehicle and helped remove the patient. March 1, 2009 – Two people were trapped in their vehicle when it flipped on its side near Knox Avenue and Falls Road. Squad 303 assisted crews by stabilizing the truck with rescue struts and flapping the roof. Both patients were extricated and taken to area hospitals for treatment. 2nd Alarm Fire at Elkridge Country Club: Fire Box 1-4
February 12, 2009 – Engine 101 was alerted just after 8pm for a fire alarm at the Elkridge Country Club. While en route, a full fire box assignment was dispatched. Engine 101 arrived on scene with heavy smoke showing. Crews from Engine 307 assisted with extinguishment on the second floor while Squad 303’s crew did a primary search and assisted with extinguishment on the first floor. Engine 302’s crew worked feverishly to save important items in the country club and covered valuables with salvage tarps. It took crews several hours to fully extinguish the fire. Squad 303 Responds to 10-50PI Rescue in Parkville: Rescue Box 10-9
January 4, 2009 – In the early morning hours, Squad 303 responded to the scene of a 10-50PI rescue. While en-route, Engine 10 advised that the driver was heavily entrapped with his legs pinned beneath the dashboard. The crew from Squad 303 helped stabilize the vehicle with rescue struts and assisted Truck 1 with removing the driver door and, rolling the dashboard off of the patient’s legs. Squad 303 Responds to 2nd Alarm Fire in Parkville: Fire Box 10-19
September 5, 2008 – Just after 6:30am Squad 303 was alerted for a 2nd alarm dwelling fire off of Hardford Road. Engine 10 reported heavy smoke from a distance and Battalion Chief 11 requested a second alarm after learning Baltimore County 911 had received multiple calls. Squad 303’s crew reported to command and was instructed to enter the dwelling adjacent to the origin of the fire to prevent the fire from spreading to the third dwelling. The squad crew pulled ceiling and made an aggressive attack to prevent the fire from spreading further. Fully Involved Garage Fire Spreads to Dwelling in Ruxton: Fire Box 14-18
July 14, 2008 – At approximately 11:45pm, units from the first battalion were alerted for dwelling fire off of Malvern Avenue. Engine 14 arrived on the scene and reported that the garage was fully engulfed in flames with possible extension into the house. Engine 307 arrived moments later and advanced a secondary attack line into the structure while Squad 303’s crew performed a primary search after a neighbor reported that one or more occupants could possible be inside. Crews encountered heavy fire and heat conditions on the second floor. The fire was placed under control and crews remained on the scene for over an hour and a half. SUV Crashes into House Trapping Driver: Rescue Box 1-29
July 9, 2008 – In the early evening, units from Station 1 and Squad 303 responded to a 10-50PI with rescue. Truck 1 arrived on location and reported a large SUV into the side of a house with the driver pinned in the vehicle. Vehicle Accident on Greenspring Avenue Traps One: Rescue Box 14-4
July 9, 2008 – Around 6pm, Squad 303 responded to the intersection of Greenspring Avenue and Greenspring Valley Road for a motor vehicle accident with two people reported trapped. Engine 14 arrived on the scene and confirmed one person trapped and requested an additional EMS unit for multiple patients. Squad 303 arrived shortly after and began the extrication process. Crews worked to stabilize the car and then removed both doors on the driver’s side of the vehicle. All patients were transported to Sinai hospital. Power Surge Causes Basement Fire in Timonium: Fire Box 17-9
June 4, 2008 – Thunder storms moved through the Timonium area with multiple lightning strikes causing several power outages. Once electricity was restored, a power surge caused an electrical panel to explode in the basement of a house. Units arrived on the scene within minutes and found heavy black smoke billowing from the rear of the house. Firefighters from Engine 17 and Engine 307 made an aggressive interior attack while Squad 303’s crew performed a primary search which came up negative. Crews operated on the scene for over an hour. 2nd Alarm Apartment Fire off of Kenilworth Drive: Fire Box 1-5
March 21, 2008 – Early in the morning, the 911 center received multiple calls for a report of an apartment fire. While en route, Engine 101 requested a working fire profile and a second alarm bringing additional resources. Upon arrival, the Captain from 101 reported heavy fire from the 3rd floor and advised dispatch they were attacking the fire with a 2 ½ blitz line. Engine 307’s crew assisted with advancing attack lines and pulled ceiling in the fire apartment. Squad 303’s crew threw ladders to the fire apartment and performed search and rescue with Tower 17. SUV Flips over Trapping Two on I-83 during Rush Hour: Rescue Box 17-80
February 25, 2008 – An off duty volunteer firefighter called 911 after witnessing a SUV flip over on northbound I-83 prior to Padonia Road. Safety 1 arrived on location and confirmed a SUV on its side with two patients trapped. Squad 303 arrived seconds later and began the extrication process. The officer on 303 decided to use the crane to stabilize the car while the rest of the crew worked to free the victims. Both patients were treated for minor injuries. Large Shed Fire Spreads to Dwelling in Hillendale: Fire Box 11-5
February 22, 2008 – Stations were dispatched to the area of Hillendale Road and Clearwood Road for a large column of black smoke and possible dwelling fire. Engine 10 arrived in the area with smoke showing and worked to secure an exact address. After finding the correct house, crews found a large shed on fire with extension into the dwelling. Engine 302 laddered the roof then assisted crews with extinguishing the fire and helped with overhaul. The fire started next to the shed after the homeowner dumped ashes from the fireplace. Bedroom Fire in the 300 Block of Timonium Road: Fire Box 17-13
January 16, 2008 – Engine 307 was picked up on the road for a reported bedroom fire while returning from a 29-5 firebox. Battalion Chief 11 arrived and advised he had smoke showing from the rear of the dwelling. Engine 307 arrived shortly after and stretched an attack line into the dwelling.
