Membership Requirements

New members are assigned a mentor during their first year of membership. Your assigned mentor will be your main point of contact. He or she will help you with the following: sign up for classes, introduce you to members, training, and answer any questions you have as you progress through your first year.

1. Training

As a probationary member, you will be expected to take the following training courses:

a. 30-hour Pre-Basic Course

i. This in-house training will familiarize you with LVFC’s equipment and apparatus.  It will also prepare you for Firefighter I class.
ii. You will work with your mentor and other officers of the company to complete this training

b. Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute Firefighter I course
c. Bloodborne Pathogens and CPR
d. Hazardous Materials Operations
e. Emergency Medical Responder or Emergency Medical Technician
f. Attend company trainings – complete a minimum of 4-hours of training per quarter

2. Meetings and Activities

Probationary members are expected to participate in all company activities but at a minimum must:

a. Attend one company meeting per quarter.
b. Participate in company functions such as fundraisers, open house, company picnic, etc.

3. Turnout Gear

Probationary members will be issued all necessary protective gear including:

a. Turnout coat and turnout pants
b. Structural firefighting boots
c. Firefighting helmet and protective hood
d. Firefighting and rescue gloves
e. Protective eyewear

Individuals may purchase their own protective gear as long as it meets or exceeds the safety specifications established by the company.
